Description
Tommys Island is a [Georges River Land Trust](https://www.georgesriver.org/) preserve that sits just over two nautical miles from Tenants Harbor in quiet Long Cove. Sheltered from the wind in all directions, Tommys is a nice destination for tranquil picnics or outings when conditions are rough. The island is open for day use only. Fires are not permitted.
Boaters should take care when navigating into Long Cove as the narrow entrance is guarded by rocks and ledges. The best approach to the island is from the west, where a massive horizontal timber marks a small cove and a good landing spot. Tommys can be accessed at all tides from the west side, but mudflats prevent access to the east side at lower tides.
The interior of Tommys Island is a mix of hardwoods and softwoods with diverse understory vegetation. Fragile grasses and erosion-prone mud banks rim the island. Visitors are encouraged to concentrate activity on the rocks along the perimeter. The eastern shore provides a good vantage point for viewing the abundant bird activity in the cove.
