Description
Little River Island sits at the mouth of the Little River in Cutler, about four and a half nautical miles northeast of Cross Island. It offers breathtaking views across the Bay of Fundy to the southern point of Grand Manan. The island is open for respectful day use and provides an opportunity to picnic or rest while enjoying an historic Maine light station.
This 15-acre island was acquired by the [American Lighthouse Foundation](http://www.lighthousefoundation.org/) in 2002 after it completed a successful restoration effort of the light station structures. Little River Light was the third lighthouse in the country and the first in New England to be transferred to a nonprofit under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. The [Friends of Little River Lighthouse](http://www.littleriverlight.org/), a local chapter of the [American Lighthouse Foundation](http://www.lighthousefoundation.org/), continues to maintain the light station structures, including the lighthouse, keepers house, oil house and boathouse.
A ramp and landing area can be found at the western point of the island near the boat house. From here, a half-mile wooden boardwalk leads through the forest to the light station buildings on the eastern end. Visitors are welcome to explore the light station grounds but are asked to be respectful of the caretaker and any guests staying in the keepers house. Camping is not permitted on the island, however overnight accommodations are available in the keepers house for a fee. For more information about the light station and for rates and availability of rooms, call 877-276-4682 or visit the [Friends of Little River Lighthouse](http://www.littleriverlight.org/overnight-stays/) online.
