Description
Berry Island is one of the three islands to the southwest of Bragdon Island in the New Meadows River. It is the smallest of the group and barred by low tide sandbars to Cleveland Island to the northeast and Hammond Island to the south. At low tide, these bars provide exceptional opportunities for picnics, swimming or stretch breaks.
The interior of the island is comprised of a mixed cluster of hardwood and softwood trees dominated by spruce and several mature oaks. Two small clearings beneath the canopy provide space for tents. Most visitors may find the island best suited for day use along the shoreline or in the intertidal given the abundance of poison ivy throughout. Visitors with sensitivities should take necessary precautions when visiting Berry Island.
Landing is easy just about anywhere along the southern or eastern sandbars at low tide. These bars are submerged at high water, but the small cove on the northeast side of the island provides good access regardless of the tide. According to town records, Berry Island was once home to a cabin as well as a wharf on the west side of the island, but few remnants of these structures are visible today.
