Description
Little Whaleboat consists of a cluster of islands linked by mud, sand, and ledge. [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) conserved Little Whaleboat West (including the small islets Nate and Tuck) in late 2021, ensuring its protection and guaranteeing public use. Ospreys and eagles nest among this cluster of islands. Please steer clear of the nest area until July 31. The eastern-most island is under separate private ownership and not open to the public; do not cross the bar at low tide.
Little Whaleboat is best approached from the northeast. Ledges guard the island to the northwest and to the south. These ledges provide important seabird and seal habitat and should be avoided by boaters. The best landing is at the northeast-facing cove, although landing is also possible on the north point and the sandy spit on the northwest corner.
Low-impact camping is allowed only in designated sites, which are linked by a trail. Campers should exclusively use the platforms and avoid camping on the ground to prevent campsite compaction and sprawl. There is no potable water available on the island. Limit stays to two nights. These campsites are commonly occupied most summer weekend nights. Have a backup plan in case you arrive to find the sites taken.
Campfires under 3 feet are allowed below the high tide line only; no fires are permitted in campsites. Please do not cut standing dead trees, bring out-of-state wood or construct fire rings. Pack out all trash, and human and pet waste. Limit noise and respect the experience of others.
Groups larger than 8 and commercially-guided groups wishing to use the island should contact MCHT (stewardship@mcht.org or 207-729-7366) prior to visiting.
