Description
This remarkable, privately-owned and intact forested headland is open to respectful visitors for low-impact day use and overnight camping. Located near the southern end of the Muscle Ridge Channel, it features a 1.5-mile perimeter walking path that parallels the shoreline revealing stunning easterly views. Along the trail one can find a remnant stone chimney from a single-room cabin that once overlooked the bold southeastern shore. A wider trail runs through the interior of the island with a split leading to two different spots on the eastern shore. The northern section of the trail passes by a few residential structures on the property. Please be mindful of their privacy.
Mosquito head is most easily accessed from the wineglass cove on the southwest. Please land by the wooden stairs at the easternmost extent of the beach where the sand transitions to cobbles. An upland stonewall just north of the staircase marks the property boundary. Please note that the shoreline to the north of the stone wall, which includes the majority of the beach, is owned separately and not part of this site. At the top of the stairs is a slightly-sloped grassy area where camping is permitted. Please note that neighboring homes are plainly visible from both camping areas. Visitors are encouraged to concentrate activity out of view of these homes to minimize the visual impact. Campfires are not permitted on the property. Please use camp stoves for cooking.
Most of Mosquito Head is protected by a conservation easement held by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, ensuring that the majority of the headland will remain undeveloped forever. The forest is dominated by black spruce with a few birches in the understory and a lush carpet of moss in places. Evidence of a recent timber harvest can be seen throughout the interior.
