Description
Tucked away in the protected waters of West River, Burnt provides a pleasant camping option when conditions are rough or temperatures are chilly further out in the bay. It is also a nice day use spot for those circumnavigating Crowley Island. The owners of Burnt live on the property just south of the island, which is barred to the mainland at low tide. They are generously sharing their island with others, but please be respectful of their privacy and minimize your visual impact.
Located just west of the northern end of Crowley Island, follow the channel up the West River until you pass a prominent dock extending out from the western shore; after rounding the dock, Burnt Island lies just north of the mainland peninsula. The best landing on Burnt is on the southern tip of the island, please use the stairs and exercise caution when ascending the bank so as not to exacerbate naturally occurring erosion. From there, a short path leads north to a clearing with a fire ring and space for one or two small tents. The path makes a loop around the small island, with blueberry bushes galore. Visitors are asked to avoid the high area at the southeastern tip of the island as it is particularly susceptible to erosion. While the island can be accessed by kayak at all tides, there are extensive mud flats in the area so visitors are advised to plan their arrival and departures around the upper half of the tide.

Anchorage
