Description
Doyle Island is surrounded by shallow, shoal waters, so caution should be exercised when approaching. The best spot to land in a paddle craft is the small southwestern facing inlet that opens to the meadow, just south of the cabin. Although most easily accessed accessed via small craft, a small, shallow anchorage that has good holding ground can be found between Doyle, Mouse Island and Hopkins Point on the mainland. Little Doyle island to the northwest is also part of the property.
The 10 x 10 Porcupine Cabin contains a futon and a woodstove and is used periodically by the owners, but it is also generously offered for public use by respectful guests. Visitors may also tent in the grassy area in front of the cabin. If you would like to stay overnight on Doyle, please text Andrew at 203-952-9590 one week ahead to check availability. Guests are asked to refrain from using the woodstove but are welcome to have small fires in the outdoor pit. All fires should be extinguished completely in the evening or upon departure from the campsite.
Doyle is crisscrossed by trails that can be accessed from the rear of the cabin. The trails wind through tranquil woodlands and fields en route to small coves and beaches rimming the shore. Remnants of historic buildings are visible in places, including the foundation of a former schoolhouse on the south end between the pier and the cabin. Another foundation can be found on the hilltop overlooking the northern fields, to the west of the tractor trail that connects the north and south ends.
