Description

Tucked away in a sheltered corner of the upper New Meadows River, Williams is a good destination for those seeking calm waters and solitude. The island consists of two large lobes connected by a narrow isthmus. The owners of the northern half of the island have generously made this property available to respectful visitors. The southern half is divided into separate private lots and is not part of the Maine Island Trail.

The waters to the north and west of Williams flat out at low tide, so the best approach is from the channel that runs the length of its eastern shore. To reach the campsite, land at the cove that faces north toward the entrance to Back Cove, located midway up the northern half of the island. Due to the gently-sloping, muddy bottom, this cove may be challenging to access at low tide.

There is a small cabin used occasionally by the owners above the south-facing cove by the isthmus. Aside from the cabin and associated infrastructure, the northern half of Williams is wild and undeveloped. A faint path connects the two coves, but otherwise there are no trails on the island. The interior rises to a forested hilltop that slopes down to a tidal mudflat on the west side, which abuts the Hamilton Audubon Sanctuary on the mainland. Visitors are welcome to explore the shoreline or the interior forest of Williams, but should avoid the cabin area when it is in use by the owners.
