Description

Located in the upper reaches of Frenchman Bay, just west of Sorrento, lies Bean Island, an idyllic picnic and camping destination only a short distance from several local launch points. Named for its conspicuous shape as viewed from above, Bean Island offers visitors sweeping views of Mount Desert Island, a large area for camping and a moderate 1 mile hiking trail that follows the perimeter of the island.

Donated by a long-time member of [Frenchman Bay Conservancy](https://frenchmanbay.org/), Bean island had been in Lisa Heyward’s family for generations. In the early 1900s, Bean Island was used by the family for grazing sheep and was primarily open field. In 1975, the island was put under conservation easement with the National Park Service. Now under FBC ownership, the island will remain undeveloped and available for public use for generations to come.

The most favorable landing is a gently sloped, small pebble beach located at the cove on the northwest side of the island, identifiable from the water by the teal colored [Frenchman Bay Conservancy](https://frenchmanbay.org/) kiosk installed just up from the beach. This landing provides access at all tides, decent anchorage and is largely protected from the prevailing southwest winds. From the kiosk, follow the footpath to the west leading to the camping area.

Bean Island is in sight of many houses on the surrounding Sorrento and Hancock peninsulas, so please be mindful of any visual and noise impacts during your stay. A popular destination for day users and campers alike, be prepared to share the site and please be respectful of other users during your visit.
