Description
Holbrook Island Sanctuary consists of 115-acre Holbrook Island plus another 1,230 acres of mainland forests, meadows, and unspoiled shoreline. The mainland portion of the sanctuary was acquired by area resident Anita Harris during the 1960s and gifted to the State of Maine in 1971. Harris maintained a residence on Holbrook Island until her passing in 1985, willing the island to the State as a natural area “devoted wholly to the preservation of nature.”
Today, the Bureau of Parks and Lands and the Friends of Holbrook Island Sanctuary maintain the island for wildlife habitat and low-impact recreation. As is the case for the mainland portion of the sanctuary, the island is open year-round from 9 am to sunset, and camping and fires are prohibited.
Holbrook Island is easily accessible from multiple locations. Beaches on the north, west and south shore provide good landing options for smaller craft. Larger vessels may find the dock on the east side more convenient. Walking paths that crisscross the interior of the island connect each of these places to one another.
There is one visitor mooring available near the island dock and additional public moorings in Tom Cod Cove near the dock and stairs to the mainland sanctuary. There is also a privy on the island near the barn on the eastern side.
