Description

Flat Island is connected to the neighboring Ram Islands by a submerged but wadable low tide bar. Depending on which source you consult, Flat Island is either considered its own independent island or part of a larger, single parcel that includes the islets that make up Ram. Since it has unique characteristics and usage considerations that differentiate it from Ram, MITA regards it as an independent island for the purpose of the Trail.

The best access to Flat Island is at the southeast point near the linkage to Ram, where a sandy beach is exposed at lower tides. Approaching from the north, you will find decent water between Flat and Ram and a narrow but inviting slice of beach for landing. The beach is a great jumping off point for walking the perimeter of the island. The shoreline is fairly easy to get around, and the western ledges provide a particularly great platform for taking in the stunning views of Hurricane Sound.

Given the topography of the island and its scrubby interior, Flat is better suited to day use than camping. Please concentrate your activity to the perimeter ledges, and refrain from trampling the fragile lichen found on some rock surfaces.
