Description
Located several miles up the Skillings River, Hyde Point and the surrounding 550 acres that make up this stunning property offer visitors a remote and secluded camping experience difficult to find in other areas of busy Frenchman’s Bay. Privately owned since the 1960s, this parcel is protected by a conservation easement held by the State of Maine, ensuring it will remain protected from development in perpetuity. The owner generously offers two options for campers looking to overnight here, but asks all visitors to call ahead to request permission first (303-591-0552).
The first campsite, boasting spectacular views of the surrounding bay, is located on the western shore of the small knob at the end Hyde Point. There is a small A-frame cabin on the southeast point of the knob which is private, but campers are welcome to set up their tent on the porch in bad weather. A gravel road that the owners use to access the cabin dead ends at the point, and campers are welcome to walk the road to explore the rest of the property. Additionally, a rough footpath beginning at Hyde Point traverses the western shoreline as far up as Mill Creek. Access to Hyde Point is very tide limited so plan to arrive and depart within two hours of high tide. Mussel flats surround much of the shoreline here and make for difficult walking.
The second campsite is located another 1.75 miles past the knob on the west side of the peninsula on the finger of land that hooks out into the Narrows. Access here is also tide limited, so plan your arrival and departure close to high water. With room for just a single 2 person tent, this intimate site offers quiet privacy and does not connect to any roads or trails on the property.
A hand pump well can be found at the site of the main cabin on the property (see map). It is available to campers in need of fresh water. Please ensure continued access to this site by respecting the property and leaving it better than you found it.
