Description
**Anchorage:** Day use anchorage recommended off the north side of the island. Be sure to check wind direction before anchoring.
One of several islands in Penobscot Bay without a name on the charts, Harbor Island can be found off of the western shore of Vinalhaven, just to the east of Crane Island. Even though it sits among a cluster of islands and along the ferry route between Carvers Harbor and Rockland, Harbor Island evokes a feeling of being miles away from anywhere. It is a great destination for those seeking solitude and escape.
The owners affectionately nicknamed the island Tobacco Juice, which masks its true character as a scenic and inspiring place. Simply put, Harbor Island is stunning. Elevated ledges rim the island, allowing visitors to walk the shoreline and gaze out at the breathtaking views in all directions. A small north-facing cove provides a natural, sheltered landing spot. Boaters should hug the east side of the cove to avoid rocks in the middle and along the west side. The head of the cove offers a nice sand beach where a short footpath leads to a small clearing beneath the conifers where there is room for a single 4-person tent.
If there was ever an island tailor-made for small boat camping, Harbor Island might be it. Picnickers are welcome and pets are too, but please kindle no fires and minimize your impact while visiting.
