Description

Tinker Island is a prominent landmark in Blue Hill Bay. Located roughly halfway between Brooklin and Mount Desert Island, it provides an excellent rest option for those traveling across the bay.

The northern half of Tinker is a [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](http://www.mcht.org/index.php) preserve conserved in 2001 with support from the Land for Maine’s Future program. Known as the McKenney Preserve, the property features two campsites and extensive beaches to explore. The Sand Point campsite is located on the western shore, and the North End campsite can be found at the northeastern tip where a newly constructed platform offers a comfortable tenting option. The southern half of the island is privately owned, and visitors are asked to be respectful of the owners and remain on the MCHT parcel.

Visitors to the Sand Point campsite enjoy spectacular panoramic views west toward Isle au Haut while those who opt to explore the northern and east side of the island are afforded excellent views of the mountains of Mount Desert Island. The ledges near the northern end of the island are important haul-outs for seal pups, please give them a wide berth especially during May and June.

Please note that there is a large raccoon population on the island, and visitors should secure food accordingly. Groups larger than 6 and commercial groups may camp by permission only. Call 207-729-7366 or email stewardship@mcht.org.

For detailed information about the island, visit MCHT's [Tinker Island Preserve](mcht.org/preserve/tinker-island/) page.
