Description
Aptly named, Green Nubble is a small island that nearly connects the town of Islesford to Baker Island. Surrounded by rocks and shoals, this low-lying island can be hard to access but provides a wonderful picnic spot for those circumnavigating Mount Desert Island or simply exploring the waters around the Cranberry Isles.
Depending on prevailing winds and seas, good approaches can be found on either side of the western hook of the island where sections of small pebble and sandy beaches provide a gentle landing option. However, beware of the many submerged rocks and shoal areas scattered on either side of the island; a slow and cautious approach with a shallow draft vessel is advised.
The picturesque shoreline provides the perfect opportunity to circumnavigate by foot or stretch legs while taking in the expansive views of the outer islands of the Mount Desert Island region. Use is best restricted to the shore as the interior of the island is dense with thick vegetation and can have areas of standing water.
