Description

The Vinalhaven archipelago is rich in natural beauty, human history, wildlife diversity and, to our collective great fortune, conserved land. Tucked in among the many preserved properties on the west side of Vinalhaven you will find Pole Island. Small in size with considerable scenic and recreational appeal, Pole is privately-owned and protected by a conservation easement held by the Vinalhaven Land Trust, which permits recreational use so long as that use does not interfere with the environmental integrity of the island or the experience of other visitors.

Mindful of the value of public access and the delicate balance with environmental protection, the owners graciously welcome boaters to enjoy their island for respect day use. The gorgeous sand beach that protrudes from the eastern shore has been a favored local picnic spot for years. On a warm summer day, it is not uncommon to find one or more boats ashore on the beach. Thankfully, there is usually room to spare. Shielded partly by ledges that guard against the swells in Hurricane Sound, the beach is most easily accessed from the north. While the sand is often the main attraction, the rocky perimeter of the island is also worth exploring. The interior of the island is predominantly wild and shrubby.

Visitors to Pole are invited to enjoy the island responsibly by following to Leave No Trace practices. Please help safeguard the ecology of the island and kindly respect the experience of others while ashore.
