Description
Conserved by [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) in 2005 with support from a National Coastal Wetlands Grant, Thomas Island is located in Mt Desert Narrows, just east of the bridge linking mainland Trenton to Mount Desert Island. Accessible from nearby boat launches in Trenton, Bar Harbor and Lamoine, it offers a convenient, sheltered destination in the protected waters north of MDI.
The best landing is along the northeast shore, just above the small, neighboring islands known as North and South Twinnie. Camping is allowed at a designated site in the shallow cove along the eastern shore, inside of North Twinnie. Thomas is covered primarily by thick spruce-fir forest and has no interior trails, but the shoreline is well suited for picnics and exploration.
Extensive mudflats surround most of Thomas Island and the Twinnies. Please be mindful of the tides when visiting. Also, give the Twinnies a wide berth as they are part of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge and home to nesting eagles.
