Description
Vaughn Island is the largest of the Cape Porpoise group at 46 acres, and is accessible by foot at low tide from Turbats Creek. Because of this it is occasionally the site of large groups and evening parties. There are three campsites, each with an established fire ring. The Grove is the largest and easternmost site and has a history of group use. Cobble Cove is located 100 feet adjacent to Grove on a wooded site. Both are adjacent to a cobble beach. North Beach is located at the southern end of the island in a grassy area above the beach. Please remember to carry off all evidence of your visit, including human waste. Please kindle fires only in established fire rings.
The entire archipelago drains at low tide, leaving a tight channel between Vaughn, and a larger passage past the Goat Island Light up to the town pier within Cape Porpoise Harbor. The Cape Porpoise Harbor channel is used by local fishing boats; recreational boaters can choose to anchor in the Turbats Creek area between Vaughn Island and the mainland to the southwest, but only briefly at high tide - this area is dry (packed sand) at low tide. The prevailing southerly winds in summer can deliver swells right through this channel, so checking on boats frequently is advised. Kayaks or canoes can be hauled up on shore west of the Grove site safely.
