Eagle Island, the former summer home of Arctic explorer Admiral Robert Peary, is a state historic site open to the public for day visits. On the island you will find the house where his wife, Josephine, received the telegram on September 6, 1909, stating that her husband had reached the North Pole. Josephine Peary tended gardens on the island that are still maintained by the Bureau of Parks and Lands and the Friends of Eagle Island. The museum, which sits on a high bluff looking out over Casco Bay, is closed for renovations until further notice.
Eagle Island is reachable by personal watercraft and also by private shuttle (try Seacoast Tours of Freeport 207-798-2001 or Rocky Coast Cruises 207-751-6501). Kayaks can land on the northeast beach below the museum beginning June 15.
Eagle Island is also home to many nesting seabirds including ospreys and herons. The walking trails that crisscross this 17-acre island are closed until July 15 to allow the birds to fledge their nests. Smoking is permitted on the beach only. For more information visit the [State of Maine Eagle Island website](http://www.maine.gov/eagleisland) or the [Friends of Eagle Island](http://www.pearyeagleisland.org) online.
