Description
This tiny island is found off the west end of Brick Island in the middle of Merrymeeting Bay. Bird makes a good jumping-off point for anyone exploring the Kennebec north to Augusta or the Androscoggin west to Brunswick. The island sees frequent use by duck hunters in the fall, as evidenced by the small rock walls and depressions in the terrain that serve as duck blinds.
Although Bird is out in the exposed waters of Merrymeeting Bay, much of the water around the island is very shallow, limiting access at low tide. The interior of the island consists of grass and scrub brush with only a few trees. Wild grape vines have spread over much of the island in recent years.
There is extensive poison ivy on the banks rimming the island and in parts of the interior. A tent platform in the interior, located at a safe distance from the poison ivy, is suitable for one tent.
