Description

Situated at the north end of Merrymeeting Bay, approximately 22 miles from the mouth of the Kennebec River, slender Swan Island measures nearly four miles in length.

Swan Island is owned and operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife as part of the Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout its history the island was used by Wabanaki, early explorers and settlers. Archaeological studies on Swan have revealed evidence of an Abenaki fishing site on the southern tip of Little Swan Island.

Swan was reportedly visited by Samuel de Champlain and Captain John Smith on their explorations, and later by other historical figures including Aaron Burr and Benedict Arnold.

Swan Island is open early May to late October for day use and camping. No reservations are required. Visitors should come ashore only at the two official landing areas: the northwest side of the island across from Richmond and the east side of the island near the campground.
