Description

Rugged Seguin Island sits nearly two and a half miles out to sea. Resting atop its high point of 186 feet is Seguin Island Light, commissioned by George Washington in 1795. It boasts the highest focal point of all Maine lighthouses. The dangerous Kennebec River currents pose serious navigational challenges, particularly to paddlers. Use extreme caution when visiting.

The northeast cove provides some protection and a low tide beach for accessing the shore. DO NOT ANCHOR in the cove as there is a submerged inactive electrical cable that can still foul an anchor. Instead, pick up one of the free guest moorings (overnight mooring permitted; Venmo donation number on buoys). A wooden tramway, the last one in operation in Maine, leads from the boathouse to the light station and is used to haul keeper supplies up the steep slope. Please keep off of the tramway; it is being evaluated for a preservation rebuild and is not safe to walk on. To reach the visitors museum and tower, which houses the only active first-order Fresnel lens in Maine, follow the footpath from the landing beach that passes beneath the tramway. This path connects with other trails that lead to scenic lookouts and a cobblestone beach.

The island is open for visitation from Memorial Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. Members of [Friends of Seguin Island Light Station](https://www.seguinisland.org/) (FOSILS) may camp in the designated picnic area off the cove trail by reservation only and for a suggested donation of $10/night. FOSILS members may also stay in the two-bedroom guest quarters suite for a $250/night donation. For more information about Seguin and membership, visit [FOSILS](https://www.seguinisland.org/) on the web.
