Description

Castle is named for the castle-like rock that marks the 90-degree turn in the passage between Upper and Lower Hells Gate. This lovely, wooded island is owned by the [Chewonki Foundation](https://chewonki.org/), a non-profit organization providing educational experiences that emphasize appreciation of the natural world and the power of collective effort. Chewonki uses the northern part of the island as a low-impact camping site for their educational camp groups. Chewonki acquired Castle in 1986 from [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](http://www.mcht.org), at which time a conservation easement was put in place guaranteeing public use and conservation of the island in perpetuity.

Visitors are welcome to camp at a spacious site on the southern part of the island. The campsite is accessible by carefully climbing the bank in the small southeast-facing cove. When the Chewonki site at the north end is in use, please limit your stay to a single night. Extensive mudflats surround the island at low tide.
