Description
Huckleberry Island is the smallest of three islands located at the junction of the Sheepscot and Marsh Rivers. It lies north of Lehmann Island and east of Woodbridge Island. This well-protected area makes a nice stopover while exploring the river upstream of Wiscasset. Owned by the [Chewonki Foundation](https://chewonki.org/), it is available to visitors for day use only.
Huckleberry makes a fine stopover while exploring the upper Sheepscot River. Paddlers can put in at the Wiscasset public ramp, which is just south of Route 1 and visible from the bridge. As you travel north, you will pass under a railroad bridge and around the bend, leaving traffic and noise behind you. The Marsh River enters from the east. If you stay in the main Sheepscot River you will come to the famous reversing falls, a popular play spot for whitewater paddlers (and dangerous if you are caught unawares!). Turning east into the Marsh River you will wind past Lehman Island and Woodbridge Island. After stretching on Huckleberry, continue upstream (tide and water level permitting) which winds back around to meet Route 1 again.
