Description
This lovely island is named Carlisle on the charts but is known locally as Big Huckleberry Island. Owned by three generations of the Richardson/Biscoe/Fallon family, it was donated in 2006 to the Damariscotta River Association, now [Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust](https://www.coastalrivers.org/). As with nearby Hodgsons, Coastal Rivers makes the island available to the public.
Carlisle has an interesting history. An ice company in the early 20th century owned Carlisle and Miller Islands. One winter, Evander and Ervine Hatch of South Bristol were hired by the company to move a building across the frozen Damariscotta River. When the time came to be paid for their labors, the company offered a choice; fifty dollars cash OR the two islands. Without much of any hesitation, the Hatch boys took the fifty bucks!
Watchful visitors may see ladyslippers in season, so be sure to take care where you step. There is a healthy population of bald eagles and osprey in this region; please inform the office if you see any signs of nesting birds on Carlisle.
Visitors will note a large fireplace just above the tide mark on the northern tip of the island, however Coastal Rivers asks that you not make any fires due to concerns about wildfires. An out of control campfire caused extensive damage to the south end several years ago; it was spotted and extinguished by volunteers from local fire departments.
