Description
An [Audubon](https://www.audubon.org/) sanctuary celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, Hog Island is a large 330-acre wildlife refuge with magnificent stands of mature spruce and pine trees, nesting bald eagles and osprey, a prehistoric settlement shell heap, and several nice beaches. A perimeter walking trail circles much of the island and is open for use. [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) holds a conservation easement on all but the northeast peninsula of the island.
The island is undeveloped except for the 30-acre neck at the northeast end, where the [Hog Island Audubon Camp](http://hogisland.audubon.org/about/todd-wildlife-sanctuary) is located. Activities may occur at the camp throughout the summer, so please avoid this area when you see activity.
A volunteer group known as the [Friends of Hog Island](http://fohi.org/) is working to preserve the legacy of the Audubon camp and support future conservation and nature programs and activities on Hog Island. For more information on the preservation efforts or to get involved, contact the Friends of Hog Island.
Camping is permitted on the tent platforms found at the southeast end of the island, opposite Hog Island Ledge. Camping is allowed when the platforms are not in use by Audubon program groups. A south-facing, all-tide sand landing beach fronts the base of the camping area. Please kindle no fires on Hog and practice strict Leave No Trace throughout your visit.
