Description

Well out in Muscongus Bay, Thief Island has a sumac grove on the north end and a shady spruce forest in the island interior, where tendrils of Spanish moss hang from the canopy. There is a trail running down the length of the east side of the island through a climax spruce forest with many blowdowns. Please use the erosion steps along the steep bank on the north side of the island when ascending from the beach to the campsite.

Heavily used in the high season, Thief has two primary camping areas, one at the north end, which features several distinct tent sites, and a single site at the south end. There is an established fire ring and picnic table at the north end that should not be dismantled. The best access to the campsites and trail is at the north end of the island. When walking the path beware of poison ivy, which exists in patches just beyond the north end campsites. Small boat access is possible at the south end when the winds and seas are calm.
