Description

Black Island is owned by [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) and open for low-impact day use and camping. MCHT purchased Black from the [Chewonki Foundation](https://chewonki.org/) in 2015, and visitors may occasionally encounter groups of Chewonki students on expedition by sea kayak or under sail.

The island is a popular day and overnight destination for the local community and for boaters traveling through the region. The north beach is a favored spot for picnicking, and there is reasonably good anchorage just offshore. There are two camping areas. The main campsite is on the northwest point. In recent years winter storms have dramatically impacted this campsite, resulting in the loss of some prime tent space. Take care ascending the bank to not to exacerbate erosion. The lilac campsite, so called because it sits on the site of an old house beside a large lilac bush, is located 100 yards south of the northeast corner of the island and is marked by several very large boulders on the shore. Paddlers arriving or departing from the lilac site at low tide should take care when traversing the seaweed-covered rocks with boat and gear.

Maine Coast Heritage Trust asks that visitors limit fires to below the high tide line, and to pack out all waste (including human and pet waste and toilet paper). Large and/or commercially-guided groups wishing to camp on Black should contact MCHT prior to their visit (207-729-7366, mjenness@mcht.org).
