Description
Burnt is located within the Georges Islands chain roughly four miles out to sea. There are several buildings on the northwest corner including two residences, a cabin, a former coast guard station and an Outward Bound island base. A lobstering family also lives on the island and uses the wharf. Please keep a respectful distance from buildings, lobstering operations, and Outward Bound programs. Please do not use the wharf or float without permission.
Burnt is open for day use with limited options for overnight stays. **Reservations are required for all overnight use, and must be requested at least two weeks in advance.** Overnight use is for current MITA members only and includes two options, a cabin or tent platforms. The cabin has six cots, a wood stove, a table, light kitchenware and a plastic chest cooler. There is no electricity or running water, but non-potable well water is available. At least two hours of light trail work per person per night or a donation to MITA is requested in exchange for use of the cabin (hand tools provided). Suggested donation is $50 per person per night. The two tent platforms for MITA use are not available during July and August.
Burnt Island has a network of several miles of trails maintained by the landowner, MITA, Outward Bound, and other volunteers. The best access to the island is at the beach on the northwestern corner, south of the spit connecting Little Burnt and Burnt. Little Burnt is not on the Trail.
