Description
Monroe Island is owned and managed by [Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT)](https://www.mcht.org/) and open for low-impact day use and camping. MCHT purchased Monroe in August of 2018 from the Faunce family after many decades of their good stewardship. Camping is permitted in two locations: at the northern tip above the east-facing cobble beach, and at the southern end above the large south-facing cove. Landing on the northeast beach can be challenging in strong winds or large ocean swells. A smaller beach on the northwest side opposite the campsite provides an alternate landing spot. Day users are welcome to use the dock on the western shore, but please plan to anchor and row in; the dock is to be used for active loading and unloading. The dock is quite small and not suitable for large boats or extended stays. There is a small beach just south of the dock which is ideal for landing dinghies, kayaks, and small skiffs.
Hiking trails crisscross the island and are easily accessed from the north campsite. Finding the trails from the south campsite is less obvious, but the landing here is much more favorable. There is often a good breeze on the south end of the island. Ticks have been found in large numbers in recent years, so be sure to check yourself and your gear accordingly.
Maine Coast Heritage Trust asks that visitors use sanctioned rings in campsites for any fires, and pack out all waste (including human and pet waste and toilet paper). Large and/or commercially-guided groups wishing to camp on Monroe should contact MCHT (207-729-7366; mjenness@mcht.org).
