Description
Little Thorofare consists of two small islets connected by a bar, located between Burnt Island and Calderwood Island. There is room on the larger eastern island for one small tent, two at most. Landing is possible on the east side of the large island or on the bar connecting it to the western hub, which is exposed at the lower half of the tide.
Access to the upland portion of the island can be difficult due to the steep, jagged shore that rises on all sides. Carrying kayaks to the top of the island for secure overnight storage can be a challenge, but the outstanding view of Penobscot Bay to the north makes it worth the effort. A quaint grassy campsite can be found amidst the rocks on the north end. Nearby, another small site nestled among the trees provides an additional option for tenting.
