Description
Hay island sits in the middle of Seal Bay on the eastern side of Vinalhaven Island. It is located to the southeast of the middle part of Penobscot Island and to the east of Burnt Island. Seal Bay is well protected from the wind, but the surrounding shoals, rocks and mudflats make access tricky. The best bet for landing is at the north end.
Hay is a low island with a small amount of exposed bedrock. It consists of a mixed spruce and hardwood forest stand surrounded by extensive tidal marshes. A well-established campsite is located at the northeast point. Beware of poison ivy that has been encroaching the campsite in recent years.
