Description

The Little Hens are a cluster of islands just to the west of Hen Island in Seal Bay. The bay is a paradise for gunkholers, providing nice protection for cruisers in blustery conditions and endless exploration opportunities for paddlers.

The southernmost islet, South Little Hen, offers a nice grassy spot for tents just above the ledges on its northeast point. The campsite is accessible at all tides and a small cobble beach on the south side provides a good landing. While the campsite on South Little Hen is poison ivy free, there is some easily avoidable poison ivy on the bank just above the south side landing area.

The largest islet, North Little Hen, is relatively high-sided, with the best access at the beach on the eastern side where the shoreline pinches in toward the center revealing a pleasant sand beach. Visitors should note that this landing area flats out at low tide, limiting access. Sailors may prefer to anchor on either the north or south sides to avoid the low tide mudflats. At mid to high tide, the beach offers a lovely place for a picnic and swim, making North Little Hen a good option for day use. Camping is permitted on the flat patches of ground just above the beach near the landing area, however poison ivy is prevalent so interested campers should use caution and may wish to set up camp on South Little Hen instead.
