Description

Butter is one of the largest islands in the Maine Island Trail system, and one of the most beautiful on the coast. It was the site of a grandiose tenting resort named Dirigo in the early 20th century.

Public access is restricted to Orchard Beach and Nubble Beach on the east side of the island, and the short beach just south of the Nubble itself. This south-facing beach allows visitors to come ashore in a northerly wind. The public is invited to enjoy the hiking trail up Montserrat Hill, accessible from both Nubble and Orchard beaches, to see the memorial granite bench and lovely views. The Virginia Trail, closer to the shoreline, connects Orchard Beach and Nubble Beach.

Camping is limited to MITA members and nonprofit groups that have received prior permission. Commercial use of Butter is not allowed. Camping is permitted between June 25 and September 10 by reservation only. Beginning June 10, campsite reservations can be made for up to three nights by contacting the island caretaker at 207-446-4147. Reservation requests are best made well in advance.

There is deep water off of both eastern beaches. Please do not pick up any moorings or land at the private dock on the west side of the island. Dogs are not allowed and fires are not permitted. There is a full time steward who monitors the island daily, and the owner is in residence during the summer. For the protection of wildlife and the privacy of the owner and caretaker, the use of drones is not permitted.

We are privileged that the Cabot family allows visitors to access Butter Island. Please adhere to all usage guidelines as you enjoy the island.
