Description
Tucked into a sheltered cove protected by Holbrook Island and Nautilus Island, the Ram Islands are a popular destination for locals from the Castine community and for boaters exploring the Bagaduce River and nearby waters. Protected in 1980 by the Conservation Trust of Brooksville, Castine, and Penobscot, the islands were transferred to the [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) in 2014 when The Conservation Trust merged with neighboring [Blue Hill Heritage Trust](https://bluehillheritagetrust.org/). The islands remain open for responsible public recreation including low-impact camping, picnicking, and wildlife viewing.
The Ram Islands consist of two sister islets joined by a sandbar at low tide. Those wishing to camp should use the tent platform in the campsite on the southern end of the western island. The campsite is best accessed from the southwest for anchoring and from the southeast for beaching kayaks. Beware of slippery rocks at mid and low tides. The western island also offers nice picnicking ledges with western views.
In recent years eagles have been nesting on the eastern island, so this area is closed to the public until August 31. After August 31 camping is permitted on the northern portion of the eastern island. This well used campsite has room for a few small tents and can be accessed from beaches on either the east or west side. Please tread lightly and avoid causing further bank erosion when accessing the camping area.
