Description

Unnamed on the chart, this small island is close to the main shore and adjacent to the west end of the Deer Isle Thorofare. Weir is a handy early stopping point for those coming east or planning to head west on the long jump across the bay. It is also a good alternative to some of the more heavily used islands in this area.

The exposed granite shoreline on Weir rises quickly to a small cap of glacial soils that are covered with a thick spruce forest. There are extensive ledges and tidal flats around much of the island that limit access at low tide, especially on the southern side. The island is guarded along much of the shore by shallow water and boulders, making the best approach from the northeast side.

Access to the interior camping area is best approached from the southwest side up a crude set of rock steps that line the steep soil bank. Please use care when ascending the island to prevent unnecessary erosion.
