Description
MITA members have permission to use about 30 acres of the northeast corner of this magnificent island, which forms the outer side of the Isle au Haut Thorofare. Explore and enjoy the woods and meadows of this point and take in the spectacular sunsets, but please respect the privacy of the summer residents to the west by staying well away from their cottages and out of view.
There is a designated campsite on the north shore in a grassy area, just above a small cobble beach to the west of the cable crossing notation on the chart (two cobble beaches down from the east point). The cobble beach below the campsite makes a reasonable landing in calm weather. From here, ascend using the stone steps to prevent further erosion of the bank. If a swell is running, you may want to go around the northeast point into the Thorofare and beach out less than a hundred yards or so down the east side of Kimball at a location marked by a cairn. From there the path to the MITA campsite is marked with simple signage and blue blazes on trees and rock cairns, and should not be confused with the unmarked private trailhead that leads up into the woods from the shell bar a little further to the west.
