Description
**Anchorage:** Anchor near the east side of the island, south of Pond Point near the Burnt Island Thorofare. Stay outside of the channel.
Burnt Island lies just north of Isle au Haut and is owned and preserved by the Charles B. Lakin Maine Land Trust. Since there are residences located on the western section of this 140-acre island, MITA access is restricted to the eastern arm. Known as Pond Point, the area has open meadows, rocky shores, and an abundance of mosquitoes. The raised gravel bar provides an ideal separation of family privacy to the west and MITA visitors to the east.
This island was historically used for farmland. An 1881 atlas labeled an iron mine just south of the western tip of the island.
Located just south of the frequently used Wheat Island, Burnt offers a quieter and more spacious camping alternative. The best landing sites are either on the north or south sides of the seawall, but sea surges can make for a difficult landing among rocky boulders. Burnt is ideally located for those wishing to circumnavigate Isle au Haut, or to avoid more crowded islands further north.
