Description
A small wooded island with an attached sand spit and extensive granite ledges, Wheat is a popular destination that you should expect to share with other boaters, especially in July and August. Landing can be difficult due to ocean swells, particularly on the eastern side. The best low tide access is from the southwest or northwest sides, which are somewhat protected from sea swells.
The ecology of Wheat Island is in transition. Spruce trees are aging out or succumbing to disease and giving way to emergent species such as raspberry and poison ivy. A particularly healthy patch of poison ivy can be found along the east/northeast side. Please take caution while exploring the island.
Wheat is a long mile southeast of Harbor Island, and a possible alternative if Harbor is being used. The campsite faces northwest with tremendous views toward Deer Isle, and is large enough to accommodate two four person tents. Please take care to avoid bank erosion when accessing the campsite.
