Description
Although Round Island is not exactly round, it has been known by this name since Revolutionary times. At least two families lived year-round on the island in the 1800s. By the early 1900s it was treeless and used mostly for pasturage for livestock belonging to farmers living on nearby McGlathery Island. Today it is wooded and owned by the [Island Heritage Trust](https://www.islandheritagetrust.org/), which received it from [The Nature Conservancy](https://www.nature.org/en-us/) in 1997 with a deed restriction that it be maintained as a nature preserve. There are no clear trails on Round; please take care near fragile lichens and mosses and stick to sand and ledges.
The best access is on the east side, opposite McGlathery. For kayakers, the southeast beach provides a good landing spot. There is a sheltered deep water anchorage between Wreck and McGlathery.
