Description
Small, high-sided and full of charm and natural beauty, Shivers Island is the largest of three small islets connected by low tide sandbars. Gently sloping granite ledges lead from the bar to a small spruce grove atop the island. A cozy little campsite suitable for one small tent can be found nestled among the spruce trees on the western shore. Neighboring Hells Half Acre is visible to the west, and on clear days views stretch to Mount Desert Island to the east.
The quaint campsite here is a nice alternative to the larger group sites on other Merchant Row Islands. Please help preserve the natural character of the island by complying with the capacity guidelines and concentrating your activity on the inviting ledges that rim the island.
The best landing area is on the west side of the island by the sandbar. Low water exposes the bar and its gorgeous shell beaches and tide pools. At mid to high tide the landing is ledge.
