Lazygut Thrumcaps

The Lazygut Islands consist of three spruce-covered islands barred together to the southeast of Stinson Neck. The largest island, Lazygut, has a private camp on its northwestern point; this island and the mooring are private and not open for use. The two undeveloped sister islets known as the Thrumcaps are open to kayakers for respectful, low-impact recreation. They offer a convenient stopping place for those traveling between Merchant Row and Eggemoggin Reach.

Nestled between the Thrumcaps is a beautiful sand beach that is accessible from both the north and south, although the northern approach is best. The beach is covered at high tide so plan your arrival and departure accordingly. A steep-sloping granite ledge makes ascending the both inner and outer Thrumcaps a challenge, but the views are well worth the effort. The outer Thrumcap is open for day use only, but camping is allowed on the slightly more easily accessible inner Thrumcap among the shelter of the trees where a small patch of ground provides space for one small tent. Access the site via a rudimentary set of rock steps on the east/southeast side. To protect the fragile vegetation and respect the privacy of the island owners, please concentrate activity on the ledges and keep out of view of the main island while visiting the Thrumcaps.

Given the nature of the island and the wishes of the island owners, this site is for kayakers only. The island owners are in residence much of the summer and request that visitors not venture over to the main island. Your cooperation will help ensure continued access to this special place.
