Description
Campbell Island is well-protected from the weather and off the beaten path. This big, robust, wild island makes a fine base camp for exploring Eggemoggin Reach and Blue Hill Bay.
Previously owned by the [Chewonki Foundation,](https://chewonki.org/) in 2017 the island transitioned into private ownership. A conservation easement held by the Island Heritage Trust ensures public access and forever protects this attractive island.
Campbell is noteworthy for an 1899 Smithsonian Institution archaeological dig that uncovered the bodies of a European man in full armor and a Native companion accessorized with beading. Nearby, the dig also uncovered a Native American chieftain found in a sitting position surrounded by a ring of stones. It is believed that the European was affiliated with Pentagoet, the French outpost in present day Castine.
There are two distinct camping areas on Campbell, one each at the northwest and northeast portions of the island. Recent blowdown activity near the northwest site has left this space somewhat less sheltered than in years past. The northeast site is still protected by the surrounding spruce grove. There is a pleasant walking path around the perimeter of the island that passes by an eagle nest on the southern side. Please be mindful of the nesting eagles while using the trail, and please kindle no fires on Campbell.
