Description

This particular Sheep Island (not to be confused with other Sheep islands on the coast) offers a mix of meadow and relatively open spruce forest, along with a small Hub island off to the northeast to which it is barred at low tide. A newly developed campsite is on the eastern shore of the main island, just upland from a small pocket beach which provides a good landing at high tide. During the lower half of the tide cycle, the campsite is more easily accessed by following a path from the sandbar. Eagles have nested on the island off and on over the last several years. If you see eagle activity, please do not go ashore.

Adjacent Stinson Neck has an active fishing, boating, and summer community. Local residents frequent Sheep Island, usually landing on the west or southwest side. We ask that visitors access Sheep from the east side in order to stay clear of the lobster boats that moor to the south and west. Please note that all approaches to Sheep are guarded by rocks.

Sheep was purchased in 1998 by the Sheep Island Realty Trust, a group of MITA supporters who came together to buy the island to continue its protection and to ensure that it remained open to the public for low-impact recreation. In 2023 ownership was transferred to [Island Heritage Trust](https://www.islandheritagetrust.org/) to ensure the island's permanent protection.
