Description
Carleton is situated in the Salt Pond, a sheltered saltwater lake that makes for an interesting area to explore by small boat. Although the island is protected on all sides by land, the trip in and out of the Pond is sure to test the skills of any skipper. Suffice to say, the narrow entrance under the bridge to South Blue Hill is a popular spot for whitewater paddling. When big tides are running at the Falls the drop between the bay and the pond can be several feet of turbulent, roaring water. Arrivals and departures should be planned for when the water is slack. Until you are familiar with the Falls, it is best to scout them before running them, as the currents are extremely strong near the entrance to the pond.
Parking along Rt 175 near the bridge is dangerous and should be avoided. Please refrain from launching boats from Rt 172 as there is no parking along the road and the land between the road and water is private.
Carleton Island was acquired by the [Blue Hill Heritage Trust](https://bluehillheritagetrust.org/) in 2015 for conservation and long term stewardship. Osprey have nested on the island in the past and eagles continue to nest close by. The island is best approached from the east as it flats out on the northwest at low tide.
