Description

To assure long term conservation and public access, the owners of Pond Island donated the island to Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT). As a result, the island is open to the general public. MCHT is reclaiming the meadow on the south side, and has created a short trail from the beach up to the old granite foundations at the top of the meadow. From there you can enjoy spectacular views.

Pond is a largely forested island, with the exception of the meadow on the south side and the salt marsh on the north. Inviting beaches can be found on all sides. To the northeast lie the mountains of Mount Desert, while vistas to the south include more spruce clad islands. Visitors are invited to explore the shoreline. Besides the sweeping views and expansive beaches, Pond is well known for its thriving population of biting flies and mosquitos in the height of the summer season. If visiting during this time, be sure to come prepared with the proper clothing and bug spray!

Camping on Pond can be found near the north end of the long beach on the east side of the island. Please use the stairs to prevent further erosion when accessing the campsite.

Pond Island is connected to Lamp Island to the north by a low tide bar. Over the years, Lamp has been disappearing into Blue Hill Bay as waves and swells nibble away at its edges. Due to its fragile nature, visitors to Pond are asked to stay off Lamp Island.
