Description
Also known as Outer Baker, this beautiful island features stunning meadows, wonderful cobble beaches, and a wild south-facing promontory looking out onto the open ocean.
Big Baker is open for low-impact camping by respectful visitors. The island also sees a lot of local day use from the Swans Island community. In order to maintain access for day users, the owners ask that overnight visitors pitch their tents away from the traditional picnic spot near the northeast landing beach. To access the designated campsite, land at the small cobble beach facing north-northeast and follow a path marked by rock cairns roughly 80 yards to the northwest. You will find a spruce grove that has room for a few tents and is generally hidden from the neighboring community of Swans Island. Feel free to hike the shore trail around the island, which is marked with cairns, but do your best to avoid crushing the lichens and mosses along the edges of the path.
The location of this island results in a great deal of flotsam and jetsam on the shore. Please carry off whatever plastic and foam debris you have room for, but be sure not to disturb any salvageable fishing gear (lobster buoys, traps, etc). A conservation easement held by [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) protects this precious island in perpetuity.
