Description
Little Black Island is owned by [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) and open for low-impact day use and camping. This small, wooded island is exposed to wind and waves from the south, and there is a constant surge against the rocky shore. Your best bet is to land on the northern shore in the lee of the island.
At high tide there is reasonably good access to the island but landing at mid tide is much more difficult. The bar connecting Little Black to Black Island provides a decent landing spot at low tide, however this requires a scramble over wet, slippery rocks. [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) also owns the southern half of Black Island and has secured public access to the majority of the island where a north-south trail bisecting the island welcomes visitors for day use. There are two active Bald Eagle nests on Black Island directly over the trail on the north and south ends. The entire trail over Black Island is “closed” from late winter to mid summer for these sensitive, nesting Bald Eagles. We ask people to give the eagles their space during sensitive times. Stewards do not use chainsaws to clear large blowdowns along the trail until the eagles are not defending their nests. An eagle parent chirping, squawking, or other calling or circling means you are too close. Please be mindful of this closure and give the eagles their space. For detailed information about the island including the trail network, visit MCHT's [preserve website](https://www.mcht.org/preserve/black-island-and-little-black-island).
To reach the camping area on Little Black, follow a path from the landing site at the northwest-facing cobble beach to a spruce grove on the southwest side of the island. There are two tent platforms in this grove; each platform can accommodate a small tent.
