Description

John Island sits at the southern end of Bartlett Narrows on the west side of Mount Desert Island between Pretty Marsh Harbor and the southern end of Bartlett Island. Less than a half mile north of Folly Island, John is small, flat-topped and covered mostly with grass. A few trees dot the high portion of the island, including a small copse of young poplars on the southern end, and steep banks drop off into the water on several sides.

John is a convenient daytime stopping point while boating in the Bartlett Narrows. A number of shoreside residences overlook this area, so please be considerate of the neighbors. Parking is limited at the nearby Bartlett Island landing.

There is a single tent camping area available by the trees at the south end. The best landing can be found on the Northeast side of the island at a small rock pebble beach which transitions to rockweed covered rocks at lower tides. Even at low tide, there is deep water up to the edge of the shoreline. Please access the island via the stairs located at this beach to help prevent erosion along the steep sided banks of the island.
