Description
Sitting in Western Bay on the northwest side of Mount Desert Island just off the northern tip of Bartlett Island, The Hub is wild and quite exposed to the weather. Its amenities are few (it is mostly ledge with little vegetation covering its rugged bedrock surface) and campsites fewer (a single quaint tent site among a small cluster of trees). However, if your intent is to get closer to nature, marine wildlife and the elements, this is a good place to do it!
The Hub is high-sided and usually covered with discarded shells and other seagull dining debris. The ledges around the island are used by seals for haul outs, and it is not unusual to find seal pups in the area. For this reason, it is best to steer clear of The Hub during the spring and early summer to give the seals and their pups space.
The lone campsite can be found in the patch of trees at the top of the island. Access is gained from the west side at high tide. At low tide, the island is somewhat accessible via the sloping ledges found at its northern tip but generally speaking, the island is difficult to access at low tide and can present a sizable challenge to hauling any paddle craft to a safe dry spot when landing on the island at low tide. Please plan your arrival and departure times accordingly.
